Pakistan has a reputation that doesn't match the reality of where we're going. Gilgit-Baltistan — the northern region this expedition rides through — is among the most visited and welcoming parts of the country. Tourist arrivals have increased significantly in recent years, and the communities along this route have been hosting travellers for centuries.
The actual risks on the Karakoram are terrain and traffic — landslides happen, roads narrow, trucks don't slow down. That's real, and we prepare for it. We monitor conditions continuously, work with local partners who know this terrain intimately, and carry contingency plans for route changes if needed.
Everything else people worry about dissolves within 48 hours of arrival. If you're reading this hoping it's a little dangerous — it's a different kind of demanding.
Absolutely. The road doesn't care and neither do we — the only criteria are the ones listed on the main page.
On Pakistan specifically: Gilgit-Baltistan has a long history of welcoming foreign visitors of all backgrounds. Communities along the Karakoram are hospitable and respectful. Standard precautions apply — dressing modestly, being aware of local customs — but these are the same precautions any sensible traveller applies anywhere.
You won't be alone. The group travels together, the support vehicle is always close, and our local guides know every community on the route. If you have specific questions, reach out directly: saad@junoonjourneys.com
A valid motorcycle license is required — no exceptions. Beyond that, we're looking for honest self-assessment over impressive credentials. You should be comfortable on roads that aren't smooth, in conditions that aren't predictable, for long days at altitude.
You don't need to be an expert. You need to be someone who has real experience and won't panic when the road gets difficult. When in doubt, tell us the truth on the application. We'd rather help you prepare than have the wrong person on the road.
All riders are on 150cc bikes provided through Adventure Planners Pakistan, who have over ten years of experience on this specific route. These bikes are purpose-selected for the Karakoram — nimble, reliable, and well-suited to the road conditions. They are not large touring bikes. That's intentional. The terrain demands something you can actually manoeuvre.
A mechanic with over a decade on these roads rides in the support vehicle for the full 15 days.
A mix. The Karakoram Highway has long stretches of smooth, open tarmac — and sections that are rough, narrow, or exposed where the mountain has reclaimed part of the road. Some days you'll be on one of the highest paved roads on earth. Others you'll ride through valley floors alongside rivers.
That variation is part of what keeps you engaged. You are not on a motorway. The road demands attention, and that's not a problem — that's the point.
Included: Accommodation, all meals, motorcycle rental, fuel, support vehicle, experienced local guide, mechanic, permits, and a Junoon Journeys leather jacket that's yours to keep.
Not included: International flights, travel insurance, personal riding gear (helmet, boots, protective pants), visa fees, and personal expenses. A full breakdown is in the information packet sent to accepted riders.
A 4x4 support vehicle with an experienced mechanic follows the group throughout the entire route. Adventure Planners Pakistan has been running these roads for over a decade — mechanical issues are anticipated, not emergencies. You will not be left on the side of a mountain pass alone.
Your main bag travels in the support vehicle throughout the trip. If you need to come off the bike for any reason, you're covered.
A helmet is mandatory — bring your own or we can advise on rental. Riding boots and protective pants are strongly recommended.
Every rider receives a custom Junoon Journeys leather jacket — included in the expedition price. Yours to keep.
September and early October are the best months to ride this route. Days are warm and clear, nights cool at altitude. Hunza in full autumn colour is one of the most visually striking things you'll see in your life.
At Khunjerab Pass at 4,693m it will be cold regardless of the season — bring serious layers. A full packing guide is included in the information packet sent to accepted riders.
You don't need to be an athlete. You need to be someone who doesn't quit when things get uncomfortable. Long days on a motorcycle at altitude are physically demanding even if you're fit — the altitude itself takes adjustment.
Beyond the riding, the expedition includes optional hikes ranging from moderate to tough. Some of the best views on the entire trip are only accessible on foot. None are mandatory, but a basic cardio base makes everything more enjoyable.
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Pakistan. Many countries are eligible for visa on arrival or e-visa. We offer visa processing assistance at additional cost — note your nationality on the application and we'll advise on the right process for you.
Start early. Pakistani visa processing times vary and we don't want it to be the thing that stops you.
Yes. Most riders join solo. The group dynamic is a core part of the experience — you will not feel alone for long. By day three, the people around you will feel less like strangers and more like the only ones who understand what you're in the middle of.
Up to 10 riders per expedition. We select based on fit, experience, and group balance — not first come first served. You won't all be the same type of person. That's intentional. The conversations that happen when genuinely different people are stuck in the same extraordinary place together are usually the most valuable part of the trip.
